Establish a starting point
To follow an arc, notice how the character handles a situation early on. Do they avoid a conversation, seek approval or act alone? A concrete description is more useful than simply calling them good, bad or complicated.
Compare similar situations
When a comparable challenge returns, the response may reveal change or resistance. Not every arc ends in improvement: someone may become harsher, repeat a mistake with new consequences or finally recognise a limit. Observe the trajectory rather than assuming it because they are the protagonist.
Duration allows nuance
Choose two decisions several episodes apart and identify what happened between them. Look for causal relationships without turning coincidences into definitive explanations. This helps distinguish gradual transformation from a sudden change the series still needs to justify.
