From page to screen: adaptation means choosing another form

Different media, different resources

A novel can follow a thought at length. In cinema, that thought may become a voice, gesture or image, or remain implicit. This is not an automatic translation of words into scenes: it changes how we receive information and approach a character.

Cuts can shift the centre

Reducing characters or moving events may concentrate a conflict, but can also remove important perspectives. To evaluate the change, first identify that element’s function in the book. Then ask whether the film fulfils it another way or chooses a different path.

Compare a small passage

Choose an encounter that appears in both works. Notice whose perspective guides it, what is revealed and what remains implied. Instead of declaring the most faithful version the winner, describe the experience each creates. You can appreciate both while still recognising specific losses.
