Some everyday sounds in a film can be recreated in sync with movements on screen.
A sound performance
Foley artists may perform footsteps, clothing movements and actions with objects while following a scene. Recording them allows control over details the set recording did not isolate. This does not mean that every noise in a film comes from Foley.
Materials serve the result
An object different from the one on screen may produce a suitable texture. What matters is the perceived relationship between sound, gesture and surface. Weight, speed and intensity can distinguish a hesitant walk from a determined entrance.
Listen to small gestures
During the next conversation scene, notice chairs, clothes and handled objects. Imagine the sequence without those details. The exercise shows how a sense of presence can depend on discreet sounds carefully built to seem a natural part of the environment.
